Thousands of striking Chicago teachers marched on City Hall, Wednesday, October 23, for a downtown protest timed with Mayor Lori Lightfoot's first budget address. ------ READ MORE: Classes at Chicago Public Schools were canceled for the fifth day on Wednesday as the Chicago Teachers Union and the district remained at odds over teacher's pay, class sizes and additional staff for schools. Striking teachers and staff have been on the picket line outside schools since Thursday but are ramping up pressure on Mayor Lightfoot with Wednesday morning's march through the city's downtown streets. Teachers and their supporters filled the streets, stopping traffic on major downtown arteries. They staged a sit in that filled LaSalle Street outside City Hall as Lightfoot detailed her plans for a $838 million city budget deficit before the City Council. The city and the school district budgets are separate.
