Hundreds of Hong Kong protesters held a religious vigil late Friday, August 9, near the Wong Tai Sin Disciplined Services Quarters, where police families live. Protesters burned joss paper and money for the “hungry ghost” in a satirical protest against authorities. People who joined the ceremony said it was held as a creative way to “voice their demands” and show displeasure to the government in a sarcastic way by burning joss paper and making offerings to the authorities. The ritual is normally held to pray for late ancestors and the dead. A few moments of tension between protesters and police erupted near the ceremony, when demonstrators appeared to run toward the officers like the anime character “Naruto.” (Reuters)
